With the 2009 professional baseball season just around the corner, there are many destinations Dixie State College students can visit to watch a game.

Along with the Major League teams that are within six hours of St. George, like the Angels, Dodgers and Diamondbacks, there are other professional teams students at DSC can see play.

Although fun and entertaining, Major League Baseball games also have qualities to them that can drive fans away. One thing is that the games are quite expensive to go to. According to ESPN.com, the average ticket price for a Major League Baseball game in 2008 was $25.40, which was a 10.9 percent increase from 2007. Other expenses that can add to the cost of a game are food and beverage, souvenirs and parking.

While Minor League Baseball teams also have expenses, it does not cost nearly as much to enjoy a good game. The reason a Minor League game costs less is because there are many teams that compete around the country, and the organizations are much smaller. If a DSC student wants to enjoy a Minor League Baseball game close to St. George that is fun and inexpensive, there are several options to choose from.

The Las Vegas 51s, the Triple-A Minor League affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, play 1 1/2 hours away at Cashman Field in Las Vegas. With a short drive from St. George, one can enjoy watching future Major League Baseball players at a cheaper price than going to a Major League game. According to the 51s Web site, www.lv51.com, an average of over 5,000 people show up to watch the games at Cashman Field.

Corey Roveri, a junior business major from Las Vegas, said he has seen the 51s play, and his experience was good because the atmosphere was memorable and more intimate than a Major League Baseball game.

"I enjoyed Cashman because most of my baseball memories were at that field," Roveri said.

If students are willing to drive a little bit farther, there are other ballparks they can visit to watch a game. Three Minor League teams play in northern Utah.
