When money's tight, look for other activity options

In these economic times wallets are thinning and prices are
mounting, forcing Dixie State College students to save money any way they can.

As students, it is easy to fall into the same routine each weekend.
Visiting the same restaurant, bar or movie theater until you have no
more than pennies to your name can get expensive. If you spend some
time looking around for new ideas and new activities to participate
in, you could find a new hobby.

The book "Sink or Swim: Get Your Degree Without Drowning in Debt" by
Sarah Deveau has a chapter titled "Cheap Student Entertainment." In
this chapter, Deveau explains what she and her husband did to have fun
and still stay on a budget while in college. The first idea she gave
was to eat with friends at home and rent a movie instead of going out.

Invite over some friends, and each of you cook your favorite dish to
share. Compared to eating out at Applebee's where tips, drinks and an
entrée can cost upwards of $20, eating in will cost just a fraction of
that amount. Renting a movie can save a lot of money in the long run
as well. A movie at RedBox costs 99 cents, while a movie ticket can
run as much as $7.50, not including popcorn, soda and candy.

Junior J.P. Defngin, a communication major from Sandy, said he and his
friends rent movies from the RedBox instead of going out to a movie,
but sometimes they go one step further to save money.

"Sometimes instead of renting a movie we go and make a bonfire," he
said. "It is definitely cheaper than going to a movie."

There is nothing better than heading to a sports bar to watch a game
with a bunch of buddies, but the price tag at the end of the night is
scary. At the Players Sports Bar and Grill, located at 1688 South Convention Center Dr., one beer costs an average of about $5, and you won't be able to just sit there to watch the game without ordering some food.

After an entrée, two or three beers, and a tip, you are easily looking
