Dixie State College's Ragin' Red show choir began in January, and since then questions about how the director was hired have been circulating.

According to DSC's hiring procedures found in the Hiring Procedures Manual at www.dixie.edu/human
res/hirproc.html, the hiring of a full-time faculty member has a specific process. The process includes prerequisites, recruitment, a selection committee, screening, interviews, reference checks and the final selection.

Merrilee Webb, the Ragin' Red show choir director, said she is an associate professor of music. According to the DSC Human Resources Department, she is an independent contractor who works part time.

Webb said she was hired differently from the hiring procedures set up by DSC.

In an interview conducted by "DSC Disclosure" reporter Angie Watts, Webb said President Stephen Nadauld called her in July 2008 and talked to her about the possibility of coming to DSC to start a show choir. She said he wanted to start a choir that would recruit students, and he asked if she would come check it out.

"He just called and wanted me to come," Webb said. "This was not a job that was there; this was a job he created."

Webb said the hiring process she did go through was the easiest process she'd ever been through.

"I think my situation was a little different just because this didn't involve a search," she said. "Oftentimes they list [the positions] on the Internet and they do a search, but this one was different. I don't know if you want to put that out there, but that's the reality. It was 'Merrilee, come if you want to do this.'"

According to DSC hiring procedures of full-time employees, created positions must have approval from the president and college council. After that, the complete job description must be submitted to Human Resources for preparation of advertisement, and the job must be advertised for at least 10 days through The Spectrum, Job Service and the college's homepage. A selection committee must also be put together and consist of at least three members.
