Professors retire after 30+ years

Along with teaching, Ashman offered free mental health counseling to the community, created a crisis hot line, and helped develop the Utah Nevada Arizona Professional Association of Counselors. He was also instrumental in establishing the Drug and Alcohol Prevention and Education Program at DSC, Hinton said.
Ashman has also received several awards and honors, including the Outstanding Teacher Award in 1965 and Utah Peace Officers Association Recognition Award, he said.
Slade began teaching graphic communication at DSC in 1978. Many of his students have become certified Graphic Communication Educators, received local and state honors for outstanding instruction in the classroom, and are employed in the printing industry as managers or shop owners.
While Slade has been at DSC, the graphic communication program has been nationally certified. Slade was honored as a Teacher of the Year finalist for the 2000 Association for Career and Technical Technology Division.
Slade said his biggest accomplishment while teaching was seeing the success of his students at national competitions. Slade also said 15 of his former students are not Graphic Arts teaching certified while others are working for, managing or are owners of other graphic design businesses.
"Receiving letters and e-mails from students who are out there teaching or working in the field-that's my payday," Slade said.
Commencement, honoring graduates along with retiring faculty members, will be held May 1 at 6 p.m. in the Burns Arena. Seating is open, and guests are asked to be seated a few minutes before the program begins.
