Students, faculty honored with Dixie Awards

Dixie State College students and faculty were honored with various Dixie Awards Wednesday night.
The first award presented was the club or organization of the year award. The five nominees were the L3 Club, Ragin' Red show choir, Student Alumni Association, Delta Epsilon Chi and ACM. DEX took home the award.
The next award was given to adviser of the year. Nominees included Rhiannon Bent, Dana Kelvington, Susan Ertel, Gordon Russell and Ami Jo Comeford. Comeford, who is the adviser for the English honor society, received the award.
Several academic award presentations were given to students who went through a selection process and received awards for being the best in their area. The awards were given to Spencer Potter, fine arts; Angie Watts, communication; Jodilyn Blake, education; John Audd, developmental education; Desi Rosenberg, family & consumer science; Susan Goff, integrated studies; Christina Cook, humanities/social sciences; Kenneth Marrott, English; Nick Adams, biology; Jamie Bennion, information technology; Tessa Creel, dental hygiene; Stephanie Adams, visual technology; Erika Field, nursing (BSN); Wendy Wilcox, nursing (ASN); Blake Dixon, computer science; Nick Orgill, accounting; and Tyler Homer, business/finance.
The male and female athletes of the year also received awards. Nominees for male athlete were Shaun Russon, Ryan Sanchez, Tyson Bailey, Kevin Young, Teddy Owens, and Cameron Crawford. Basketball player Sanchez received the award. Female athlete nominees were Haley Schumers, Katie Luna, Mikala Wilkes, Ashley Hamm, Ashley Lafeen, and Deney Phommabout. Softball player Schumers took home the award.
The heart of Dixie award was given to Brock Bybee. Other nominees were Chelsea Gould, Nadia Hasan Naqui, Patrice Humphries and Carol Sue Harris.
Bybee said: "I don't know what to say. This has been an incredible five years since I've been here. I'm so grateful to be a part of this college."
The student involvement and Dixie spirit awards were given out next.
Director of Admissions Brandon Boulter said the students receiving these awards have taken full advantage of their opportunities on campus.
"His or her contributions were not only visible in their organization, but to a campus as a whole," Boulter said.
Nominees for the student involvement award were Tammy Dee Platero, Abby Hirschi, Richard Smith, Ashley Gibson and Brock Bybee. Platero received the award.
Nominees for the Dixie spirit award were Holland Olsen, Thomas Whiting, Kona DeLaCruz, John Knudsen and Penny Barney. Olsen received the award.
Olsen said: "I really love this school; it's changed my whole life. It's the best decision I've ever made. I'll always have red sand in my shoes."
The next award given was the distinguished staff award. David Roos, director of enrollment management, said the award recognizes a staff member who has distinguished himself or herself to serve faculty, staff and students. The nominees were Stella Callagee, James Miller, Marilyn Lamoreaux, Christy Jensen and Bob Reed. Lamoreaux,administrative assistant to the president, took home the award.
"This is such an honor," Lamoreaux said. "I'm so privileged to be here. I love all of you. This is a labor of love."
Next, Academic Vice President Donna Dillingham-Evans presented all the honors graduates to the audience and announced the valedictorians for this year. Angie Watts will be valedictorian for associate degree graduates, and Diana Stanley will be valedictorian for bachelor's degree graduates.
The next award given was teacher of the year. Nominees were Jane Edwards, Adi Thelen, Curtis Larsen, Nate Staheli and Clare Banks. Thelen, assistant professor of communication, received the award.
"I am speechless because I know this award is only as good as all of you guys at Dixie," Thelen said.
A special award was also given to associate music professor Ron Garner, who is retiring after more than 50 years of teaching at DSC.
Next, the 2009-2010 DSCSA Executive Council was introduced to the audience and took oath of office.
The next award given was entertainer of the year. Five students performed throughout the award ceremony. Ricky Valadez played a song he wrote on the piano, Stephanie Higginson sang a song from "Jekyll and Hyde," Nolan Hanley sang a song he wrote, Cheristian Lee sang a song from "Wicked," and Brittney Holman danced to the song "Angel." After their performances, judges voted and Higginson took home the award.
The two final awards given were outstanding male and female student. The male nominees were Dewey Denning, Nick Rhodes, Logan Whatcott, Quin Monson and Nate Jensen. Denning received the award. The female nominees were Desi Rosenberg, Jentry Edwards, Madison Morrell, Chelsea Gould and Robyn White. Gould received the award.
