Everyone has his or her idea of the perfect relationship, how to make a relationship work, and keep the love alive, but many times the execution of such concepts fall short and sparks fade.

When sparks may begin to fade or conflicts arise, something needs to be done to stop the downward spiral before it's too late, or it can be avoided altogether.

"When you first get in a relationship, you're on a high," said Amy Cluff, a licensed clinical social worker at A Southern Utah Counseling Experience, 1240 E. 100 South, Building 23-202. "It feels like an event that makes you happy. That magical experience that seemed so effortless doesn't last forever, and that's when the work begins. Relationships are like a living thing. In order for them to develop, grow and be a success, they need to be attended to and nourished."

Cluff said a woman may feel loved when she and her partner have long talks. Cluff said the woman should tell her partner because he might instead think she feels loved when he takes her to a football game.

"We like to be shown love and affection in different ways," Cluff said. "What you consider loving may not be the same as your partner, so communicate your likes to each other. Give your partner love in the forms that they like. Support one another in personal endeavors and interests. A little investment in each other goes a long way."

Meagan Edwards, a freshman nursing major from Roosevelt, said communication, listening and honesty are keys in keeping a relationship strong and healthy.

"Having a friendship before is really important too because then you know each other more intimately…," Edwards said. "I also think that going out and doing activities is really important."

Having certain things in common is also helpful, Edwards said, as well as trying new things and being adventurous.
