The Dixie State College baseball team (24-17, 11-9) finished the week in Hawaii on a bittersweet note, winning two out of the last three games against the University of Hawaii at Hilo Vulcans.
The bittersweet part was that one of the wins against the Vulcans (18-17, 9-11) did not count toward conference standings. The Red Storm played a doubleheader on Tuesday and one game on Wednesday against UHH, and Wednesday's game did not count.
On Tuesday, DSC was looking to recover from being swept in the doubleheader on Monday. Game one was one of senior pitcher Skyler Southwick's best games of the year. Southwick threw the complete game, going seven innings, allowing six hits and only one earned run, while striking out six Vulcan hitters.
The Red Storm offense lit up Vulcan starter Jesse Moon. Moon allowed six earned DSC runs in only 3 2/3 innings of work, giving Southwick all the run support he needed.
Senior catcher Tim Mott, a business administration from Las Vegas, led the offensive attack, going three for five with two RBIs, while senior infielder Jimmy Dever also had three hits with three runs scored. DSC scored once in the first, second and third innings, then broke out for three runs in the fourth and five runs in the sixth to seal the 11-1 victory.
The night game was a totally different story. The Red Storm were held to only five hits, while the Vulcans only managed six hits. Senior pitcher Tyson Bailey pitched well enough to get the win for DSC, going 4 1/3 innings of work, allowing only two hits, two runs and four walks.
It looked like Dixie would get the win, going into the fifth inning with a 2-0 lead, but UHH scored two of its own to tie the game at two apiece. Senior pitcher Nick Orgill held the Vulcans scoreless for 1 2/3 innings, when he was replaced by junior pitcher Todd Morlock in the seventh and final inning.
Morlock had two outs with a runner on third, trying to send the game to extra innings, when Shane Kessel singled, bringing home the UHH run, winning the game in walk-off fashion, 3-2.
