Administrators in the Dixie State College business department put on a monthly event that brings students together with their professors and potential employers, and they encourage other departments to do the same.

The business department's event, Burgers on the Balcony, is designed to bring students, teachers and business people together in a social setting. Troy Randall, an adviser in the business department, said a different business or organization sponsors each event, providing a short presentation and $300 for the food. Burgers on the Balcony takes place on the third-floor balcony of the Hazy building at noon one Thursday of every month. The events are open to all upper division business students.

William Christensen, dean of the business department, said the laid-back environment gives students opportunities to create ties that can help them in the future.

"Businesses get a chance to check out the students, and students get a chance to check out the businesses," he said. "We hope there are some connections made there, maybe even some that could lead to employment."

The interaction between faculty and local business people may also be beneficial to the program.

"When businesses kind of know and trust and respect our faculty here and when we know and trust local businesses, we can work together better," Christensen said. "I think that also makes them more willing and more likely to want to hire our graduates."

Additionally, Burgers on the Balcony provides a social atmosphere for students to get to know others working through the business program.

"As a business school, we also want to create a part of that Dixie spirit or pride, not just for the college, but also for our business school," Christensen said. "Having this kind of activity where we can get together as people interested in the business school hopefully creates that sort of fellowship."

Randall said they invite representatives who can provide students with some sort of boost, whether that comes in the form of a job or a chance to add an impressive tidbit to a resume.
