From left, senior Seth Mortensen, a biology major from Idaho Falls, Idaho, and junior James Freed, a business major from Sandy, tackle a Central Washington wide receiver in a 23-9 loss to the No. 2 Wildcats. DSC's defense improved, holding CWU to 23 points, after allowing 37 points in their first encounter Oct. 3 in Ellensburg, Wash.

The Red Storm (4-6, 2-3) dropped its final home game of the season, falling to No. 2 Central Washington University (10-0, 5-0), 23-9.

DSC's first drive of the game stalled and the defense looked to have stopped Central Washington when Wildcat kicker Garrett Rolsma's 36-yard punt hit senior cornerback Richard May and bounced into the hands of Wildcat Buddy Wood. The Wildcats took over at the 19-yard line and after two failed attempts to get into the end zone, Wildcat running back Randall Eldridge took a five yard scamper into the end zone to give CWU an early 7-0 lead.

The Red Storm responded on its next series with a 31-yard field goal by junior place-kicker Mike Langston that cut CWU's lead to 7-3 with 5:08 left in the quarter. DSC scored their lone touchdown of the game when junior running back Adam Wells caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Judd Thompson, but Langston's extra point attempt was blocked. Central Washington held onto their 13-9 lead going into the half.

The second half began with a 72-yard kick off return to the DSC 5-yard line by Wildcat defensive back Jerome Williams. Central Washington then scored on a Cole Morgan 5-yard sneak to extend CWU's lead to 11. DSC's only scoring threat in the second half was when Thompson found Wells for a 40-yard completion to the CWU 16-yard line. The drive stalled and DSC settled for a 33-yard field goal attempt by Langston. The attempt was blocked by Wildcat defensive back Courtney Smith, which kept the game at 20-9 until Rolsma's fourth-quarter field goal cemented the victory for the Wildcats.

Defensive Coordinator Ken Schmidt said the defense played really well. They didn't allow Central Washington to score as many points as they did in the first game.

First, I LOVE our defense. They put DSC's offense in a position to win this game (and others) but our 'O' let them down. Analysis:
1 - O-line is soft & can't run block; if the QB drop is 3 steps+, Thompson has people in his grill. (Continued…)
